    Warning:
  • Occasionally people die up here.
  • Be smart.
  • Bring water.
  • Bring a couple energy bars.
  • Bring an emergency blanket or shelter.
  • Don't go without a friend.
  • Don't go without a map.
  • Be prepared for rain and cold; this is Scotland.
  • Leave a note in your car or room saying where you went and when you should be expected back.
  • Talk to people you meet on the way up.
  • There is no mobile phone coverage.
  • It gets foggy as hell with no warning, and you don't know which way you came.
  • Compasses are not to be trusted in the hills, due to some magnetic properties of the rock.

A very comfortable place to stay and get good hill-climbing advice.

Plants in the hills, part 1. These cuties must have been at about 400 m. See also later.

Nice view of Loch Brittle, her mouth opening into
the Sea of the Hebrides, and the island of
Canna, which should be about 11 km distant?

This must be around the time it hailed on us.

The wee lake inside Coire Lagan. This lake and the surrounding plateau
form the last rest spot on your way to the top of the Cuillins. The elevation
is 590 m or so. From here you can decide whether you're up to another pitch.

My gracious host and brave climbing partner JL and I at the bottom of the
approach to Sgurr Alasdair from Coire Lagan. Location is at
57.20798° N, 6.23270° W, elevation about 594 m. (I think we are just
above that, but close enough.) View is ESE. The image is a link to the

I let JL take a wee break at this point.
Her arms are shorter than mine and she did not
see any handholds she was sure of for the next section.

This is the scramble that stood between us and
summitting Sgurr Alasdair by our chosen approach.

DSCN1922.JPG
That's right, a scramble so terrifying that
the camera could not focus on it.

Tai and the pitch that defeated Tai. :)
There's no dishonour in not
dashing yourself to bits. Trust me.

Here's a view down onto Coire Lagan from my resting place at 732 m.
You can see the trails that lead to the scree climb (See Dscn1931), and some
circular stone windbreaks people had built. A nice place to have lunch.

The misty peak of Sgurr Dearg seen from the bottom of the last pitch
of a north-west approach to Sgurr Alasdair. View is looking NW from
57.20622° N and 6.22901° W at an elevation of about 732 m. You can see,
maybe, why we didn't choose to climb Sgurr Dearg. The full image is 351 kB.

The scree slopes up Sgurr Mhic Choinnich.
Also not that inviting, but pretty coloured rock. Same location
as above. The image is a link to the original, 468 kB.

Some nice plants I saw at the 720 m level, the highest I got. Any botanists want to tell me what these fellows are?
